Globe Trotting: Glacier Park proposes fee hike

ASSOCIATED PRESS
A car passes through an aqueduct for water supply from alpine springs in Vienna. The Viennese take it for granted, but elsewhere it is rapidly becoming a rare commodity: crystal-clear water drunk straight from the tap. Vienna gets its water from alpine springs, some fed by glaciers, transported for more than 100 miles without the aid of pumps or other mechanical means.

Glacier Park proposes fee hike

WEST GLACIER, Mont. » Glacier National Park is proposing its first fee increases in nearly a decade with the goal of having more money for projects that enhance a visit to the park.

The park proposes raising its seven-day vehicle entrance fee to $30 from $25 in the summer and to $20 from $15 in the winter. The cost of annual park passes would increase to $60 from $35.

Fees for motorcyclists, individual hikers, bikers and group campsites would also increase.

Under the proposals, the park would create a seven-day motorized boat launching permit for $10 and a $40 annual permit to help pay for managing boat-launch facilities.

If approved, the fee changes would take effect in May and are meant to raise an additional $500,000 that could be used for interpretive programs at campgrounds, restoration of trails, improvement and replacement of restrooms, maintenance of roads and shuttle bus operation.

Casa Bacardi cuts free drinks

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico » Drinks are no longer on the house at Casa Bacardi in Puerto Rico.

Foreigners will now have to pay $12 to visit one of the most popular tourist attractions in the metropolitan San Juan region. The seaside rum distillery had been well known for its free drinks and tours.

The new charge includes a drink, a commemorative 12-ounce acrylic glass and a tour of the Bacardi Visitor Center, according to Casa Bacardi. Those who want a tour of the distillery, a sampling of four premium rums or a drink-confectioning course must pay an additional $23.

Casa Bacardi officials said they also plan to renovate their facility and revamp their drink menus.

Met opens show on Cezanne’s wife

NEW YORK » New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art has opened an exhibition that focuses on the portraits Paul Cezanne made of his most frequent model: his wife.

The exhibition, "Madame Cezanne," runs through March 15. Twenty-four of the 29 known portraits of Hortense Fiquet will be on view.

Cezanne was 30 when he met her in Paris in 1869. She was 19 and working as a bookbinder. Cezanne kept the affair and their only child, Paul, a secret from his parents for fear of their disapproval. They eventually married in 1886.

It was a complicated relationship. He painted her for over 20 years but left her out of his will, leaving everything to their son.
