Former governor’s employee charged with theft

A state employee has been charged with stealing state funds while working for Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s office.

Roxanne Kamalu was charged in a grand jury indictment on Nov. 13 with second-degree theft and use of a computer in the commission of a separate crime.

She was released on $7,000 bond and pleaded not guilty on Nov. 20.

A spokeswoman for the state House of Representatives confirmed Kamalu is currently the office manager for Rep. Ken Ito (D., Kaneohe, Maunawili, Olomana). She deferred other comments to the state Attorney General’s Office.

Deputy Attorney General Michael Kagami said Kamalu used funds from the governor’s office for personal use on Sept. 30, 2013.

He said Kamalu used a computer to commit the theft and spent between $300 and $1,000.
