A yellow rescue buoy marks the spot where a Maryland man was picked up by a Jet Ski Friday afternoon. A firefighter who jumped into the water with the buoy waits safely beyond the whitewater for the Jet Ski to return for him.

Kauai firefighters rescued a 27-year-old man from the waters near Queen’s Bath on Kauai’s north shore on Friday.

The man, a visitor from Maryland, was swimming when he became distressed around 1:20 p.m.

Two firefighters jumped into the rough water with a rescue tube, but the man had a difficult time holding on.

Lifeguards arrived with a jet ski and brought the man safely to shore.

The man showed signs of exhaustion and abrasions. He was taken to Wilcox Hospital for further treatment.

“We were very fortunate to have avoided tragedy on Friday, but that is not always the case,” stated Fire Chief Robert Westerman. “Queen’s Bath can be an extremely dangerous location, especially in these conditions. We continue to urge the public to heed the ocean warnings for their own safety and the safety of our first responders.”
