Hawaii men’s basketball freshman forward Sammis Reyes has decided to leave the program for a second time — and this time for real.

Reyes will enroll at Palm Beach State, a junior college in Florida, over the semester break. He said he hopes to be back in the Division I ranks by the 2016-17 season.

“It’s the best situation for me to get re-recruited and start the process all over again,” Reyes said Monday. “And hopefully get some good looks down the road.”

The native of Chile out of North Broward Prep (Fla.) did not play a minute of game action for the Rainbow Warriors. He injured a toe in the preseason, then decided to leave the program soon after head coach Gib Arnold’s firing on Oct. 28. Reyes had a change of heart before the season opener and returned to the team under Benjy Taylor, but then injured his hand during a practice. He was to miss the entire 2014-15 season after recent hand surgery.

“That’s one of the main reasons why I’m leaving,” Reyes said. “I wanted to play, and then I got hurt, my toe first and now I hurt my hand, so I can’t play. If I’m sitting out, I’d much rather sit out at home (in Florida), you know?

“I was really looking forward to playing here. But you know, it is what it is. Circumstances weren’t the best. Coach got fired, I got injured twice. So, just move on to something new. Hopefully I get some more luck there, man.”
