Alcohol suspected in Maui crash that injured 40-year-old man

A two-car collision in Kahului sent a 40-year-old Kihei man  to a hospital with life-threatening injuries overnight.

At about 12:23 a.m. Wednesday, a 2006 Suzuki sedan, driven by the victim, traveled east on North Mehameha Loop, failed to yield at an intersection and was struck by 2015 Nissan sedan driven by a 65-year-old North Carolina visitor traveling south on Mokulele Highway.

An ambulance took the 40-year-old man to Maui Memorial Medical Center. Paramedics treated the driver of the Nissan for minor injuries at the scene.

Police said the driver of the Suzuki was not wearing a seatbelt. Airbags in both vehicles deployed. The driver of the Nissan was wearing a seatbelt.

In a news release, Sgt. William Hankins of the Maui Police Department’s Vehicle Homicide Unit, said, “The involvement of alcohol is suspected however the investigation is still pending.”
