Maui police have identified a 39-year-old Virginia man who died on Christmas Day after experiencing breathing difficulty while snorkeling in the Kihei area.

Police said Dan Tuma of Virginia was snorkeling Thursday with a family member when he experienced difficulty breathing. He fell unconscious and cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed, police said.

Police said Tuma was taken by boat to Maalaea Harbor at about 12:13 p.m. The Coast Guard and medics met the boat. Despite the life-saving measures taken, Tuma died, Maui police said in a press release.

Cause of death is pending an autopsy.
