UH basketball team rolls past Southern

The Hawaii men’s basketball team kept rolling in nonconference play with a 71-57 defeat of Southern before a Stan Sheriff Center crowd of 4,295 on Monday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

UH was sloppy coming off a third-place showing in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic on Christmas, committing a season-high 23 turnovers. But the Rainbow Warriors (11-4) forced plenty of their own (24) and were able to empty their bench in the final minutes.

Sophomore center Stefan Jovanovic came off the bench to score a career-best 13 points on 4-for-6 shooting with five rebounds. Forward Aaron Valdes added 13.

UH shooting guard Garrett Nevels played with his right hand wrapped in a cast after tearing a ligament by his thumb in UH’s win over Colorado on Christmas. He had four points and four assists.

UH continues play on Tuesday night against Prairie View A&M (2-10) at the Sheriff.

Jovanovic completed a three-point play on a dunk and Isaac Fleming followed with a 3-pointer off a turnover as part of a 13-0 run to blow the game open in the second half.

Southern guard Tre Lynch went on a personal 8-0 run to cut UH’s lead to 65-51 with 3:25 to play. UH reserve guard Niko Filipovich ended the spurt with two free throws.

UH led 31-23 at halftime despite committing 13 turnovers in the first half. Southern had 11 giveaways and shot 37.9 percent in the period.
