University seeks revised lease for Mauna Kea astronomy

HILO >> The University of Hawaii has begun steps for a revised lease for astronomy facilities on Mauna Kea.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports the university wants a new master lease and last week issued a 160-page environmental impact statement preparation notice.
The notice discusses the university’s proposal for a new 65-year lease covering the Mauna Kea Science Reserve and Halepohaku mid-level facilities.
There are now 13 observatories and telescopes on the mountain. The new Thirty Meter Telescope has been approved for construction.
The notice last week says future development will be limited to existing sites.
The university’s current master leases expire at the end of 2033 for the 11,288-acre science reserve and in 2041 for Halepohaku.
