160-foot albizia tree in Pacific Palisades to be removed

A large ablizia tree that threatens to topple over several homes in a Pearl City neighborhood is being removed this week.

The 160-foot tree is located across from Palisades Elementary. It is being removed by Imua Landscaping Inc. under a $58,000 contract with the State Emergency Management Agency.

It’s the first hazardous tree to be removed with $1 million provided by state lawmakers. The measure allows the state to enter private property to clear trees, rocks or streams that create dangerous conditions to neighboring properties.

State Rep. Gregg Takayama, who represents the Pacific Palisades neighborhood the tree is in, proposed the funding. He says it will save lives and protect property.

Several other large trees on the priority list for removal are in Ahuimanu, Kaneohe and Manoa.
