No. 9 Hawaii upsets No. 3 UCSB in volleyball

Hawaii's Kupono Fey hits past the UCSB triple block at match point for the win in the fourth set of the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos vs the UH Rainbow Warriors volleyball match at Stan Sheriff Center.

Senior opposite Brook Sedore put down a season-high 19 kills and senior All-American middle Taylor Averill added 15 kills as No. 9 Hawaii upset UC Santa Barbara 25-23, 25-23, 24-26, 27-25 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball opener for both teams Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Junior Siki Zarkovic added 14 kills for the Rainbow Warriros (4-1, 1-0), who snapped a seven-match losing streak against the Gauchos (4-1, 0-1).

Hawaii had a chance to complete the sweep, leading 17-11 in and 23-19 in Set 3 but couldn’t close it out.

Jake Delson and Kevin Donohue each had 16 kills for UCSB.

The teams meet again Sunday at 5 p.m.

Hawaii outblocked UCSB 15-12 with Averill and senior middle Davis Holt in on seven. Sedore finished with a double-double when added 11 digs. Sophomore hitter added eight kills and 10 digs.

Donohue also turned in a double-double when adding 10 digs.
