CHARLOTTE, N.C. >> Joe Gibbs says he was as shocked as everyone else to learn the NFL is investigating whether the New England Patriots deflated footballs to gain an advantage over the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship game.

The three-time Super Bowl winning coach says he’s never heard of anything comparable happening when he coached the Washington Redskins from 1981-92 and 2004-07. He spoke Monday during NASCAR’s annual media tour.

Gibbs says he anticipates the NFL will change the way it oversees footballs before games.

The Patriots reached the Super Bowl last Sunday with a 45-7 win over the Colts.
