Hawaii’s woes continue in a 6-3 loss to New Mexico State

New Mexico State senior Matt Loeffler, a 2010 Waiakea High graduate, took a shutout into the eighth inning and got early offense from the Aggies who beat Hawaii 6-3 on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

New Mexico State (4-16-1) tagged Hawaii starter Kyle Von Ruden (1-2) for five runs on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings in his shortest outing of the season.

Loeffler gave up seven hits and three runs (two earned) in 7 2/3 innings with two walks and a strikeout to earn the win for New Mexico State, which has as many wins against UH (8-15) as it did in its first 18 games of the season.

Eric Ramirez broke up the shutout with a two-run single in the eighth inning and Kaeo Aliviado had three infield hits and scored a run to lead Hawaii.

Bill Conard struck out the final four UH hitters to end the game and earn the save.

The series concludes Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
