Ex-Punahou star Buckner is third-team preseason All-American

Oregon defensive lineman and Punahou graduate DeForest Buckner has been named to the preseason All-American third-team by Phil Steele’s College Football magazine.

Buckner, the top tackler on the Ducks’ defensive line, decided to return for his senior year. The other defensive tackle on Oregon’s team, Arik Armstead, turned pro and was selected 17th overall by the San Francisco 49ers.

Defending national champion and University of Hawaii opponent Ohio State landed two players on Steele’s first team — running back Ezekiel Elliott and defensive end Joey Bosa.

Notre Dame had the most first-team projections in offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley, linebacker Jaylon Smith and free safety Max Redfield. USC had two on offense — quarterback Cody Kessler and center Max Tuerk.
