Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi meets with the media at the Capitol rotunda in Honolulu to talk about an ethics complaint concerning his use of county credit cards for personal expenses.

HILO >> The Hawaii County Council is considering strengthening laws after an audit of the county’s government credit card program found evidence of misuse.

West Hawaii Today reports that Puna Councilman Greggor Ilagan says he has prepared a bill that should be ready for council meetings this month. Council Chairman Dru Kanuha says he’s also considering a bill.

The audit found that Mayor Billy Kenoi’s record keeping was inconsistent, with many purchases going without receipts of explanations, but that most pCard use does not have problems.

Kenoi has admitted to using the card for big bar tabs and surfboards. He has paid back more than $31,000 of the almost $130,000 he charged during his tenure.
