Kauai police look for suspects in theft of 65-foot catamaran
A 65-foot catamaran belonging to a tour company was stolen from Port Allen Harbor in Hanapepe on Tuesday night.
Shortly before 6 a.m. Wednesday, police said company employees arrived to work when they noticed the catamaran missing. They conducted a search and spotted it later that morning roughly 2.5 miles offshore.
The Coast Guard assisted the tour boat company in the search.
Police said the catamaran was left abandoned and partially submerged in the water. It has since been towed back to the harbor.
The catamaran sustained damage to the left side of the hull, propeller and rudder. The damage, estimated up to $175,000, appears to be consistent with hitting reef or a breakwall, police said.
A source said the catamaran is owned by Holo Holo Charters, Inc. A company representative could not be reached for comment.
