Firefighters were at the scene of a building under construction at Ala Moana Boulevard and Kamakee Street early Wednesday morning.

Firefighters responded to a roof fire at a 20-story condominium under construction in Kakaako Wednesday morning.

Firefighters were hampered in extinguishing the fire at Kamakee Street, Auahi Street and Ala Moana Boulevard since the elevator and the stand pipes were still under construction, a Fire Department spokesman said.

Firefighters used portable extinguishers to put out the fire, which was contained to a small portion of the roof.

Construction workers on site early helped firefighters get to the fire.

The fire was reported at 4:57 a.m. and extinguished at 5:45 a.m.

Seven companies with 35 firefighters responded.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimate was available Wednesday morning.

Honolulu Police asked motorists to avoid the Kakaako area and find alternate routes around Auahi Street between Ward Avenue and Kamakee Street ,and Kamakee Street between Queen Street and Ala Moana Boulevard until fire engines left the scene.
