Man fatally injured after car crashes into tree in Kapolei

A 73-year-old man was fatally injured Wednesday afternoon when his car crashed into a tree in Kapolei, police and Emergency Medical Services said.

Police said the driver was trying to pass another vehicle on Kapolei Parkway about 2 p.m. when it clipped the mirror of the other vehicle and swerved hitting the curb of the median. The car continued on and crashed into the tree in the median, police said.

The crash occurred near Kapolei Parkway and Kinoiki Street, police said. The man was pinned in the vehicle, EMS said.

The man was taken by ambulance in critical condition to a hospital where he later died, police said. The driver of the other vehicle, a man in his 60s, was not injured in the accident, police said.

Police closed eastbound Kapolei Parkway between Kamaaha Avenue and Kualakai Parkway for about 1.5 hours.
