Man charged in theft of money from Kapahulu bank

A 31-year-old man has been charged with stealing from First Hawaiian Bank in Kapahulu.

Fredrick Funaki Jr., of no local address, was charged Wednesday with second-degree theft. His bail was set at $25,000.

Police said Funaki entered the bank about 9:30 a.m. Saturday, demanded money, and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

He was arrested about 6 p.m. Monday at Crane Community Park. Police initially opened a second-degree robbery case, but the charge was later reduced to theft. Use or threat of force is a condition for robbery under state law.

According to a felony charging document, Funaki took more than $300 from the branch. If convicted, he may be sentenced to an extended term of imprisonment because he is a persistent offender with two or more felony convictions, the document said.
