High surf closes Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay is closed until further notice due to high surf, the city Department of Emergency Management said Saturday morning.

The upper level and visitor center remain open, the city said.

A large north northeast swell is expected to generated waves as high as 14 to 18 feet along the north-facing shores and 6 to 10 feet along the east-facing shores.

A high surf advisory is in effect for the north- and east-facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and the Big Island.

The National Weather service says the surf will lower to 12 to 16 feet on Sunday for the north-facing shores and 6 to 9 feet along the east shores.

The advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday.
