Man swept away in Wailuku River identified

An 18-year-old man, who died after being swept down the Wailuku River in Hilo on Wednesday has been identified.

Hawaii County police said Kevin Jay Ishikawa, of Hilo, was crossing the river after swimming with three friends near the Piihonua Bridge when he was swept downstream about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Two of his friends pulled him from the river and performed CPR until emergency personnel arrived.

Ishikawa was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:24 p.m, police said.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine his exact cause of death.
