Witnesses report seeing boy starting Maui brush fire

Maui fire investigators are considering a report by witnesses who said the brush fire in Kihei Tuesday that destroyed two acres and came within a 100 feet of homes may have been started by a juvenile male.

The brush fire was reported at 2:24 p.m. Tuesday near Kaiwahine Street in Kihei.

Kihei firefighters arrived at 2:35 p.m. and found about an acre of dry brush burning at the end of Kaiwahine Street, next to Hale Piilani Park. Crews brought the fire under control by 3:11 p.m.

Flames came within 100 feet of the nearest residential structure, but favorable weather conditions helped suppress any threat it posed. A building housing a weather monitoring station was affected by fire but did not sustain any damage.

Witnesses reported seeing a juvenile male lighting the grass on fire then fleeing the area. There were no injuries and no structures were damaged.
