Hawaii wide receiver Devan Stubblefield (9) is upended by Fresno State linebacker James Bailey (24) during the first half of a college football game between the Fresno State Bulldogs and the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors tonight at Aloha Stadium.

What was once a good rivalry in college football is little more than a footnote, these days.

Fresno State and Hawaii are struggling this year in the Mountain West Conference with neither team bound for the postseason as 2015 winds down with Fresno State winning tonight’s game 42-14 before an Aloha Stadium crowd of 16,131.

Fresno State quarterback Zach Greenlee threw six touchdown passes to five different receivers in leading the Bulldogs to only their third win of the season. They are 3-7 overall and 2-5 in league play. Hawaii dropped to 2-9 for the season and 0-7 in MWC play. The Rainbow Warriors have only one conference game left next Saturday against San Jose State.

Greenlee hit 20 of 35 passes for 285 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions. He had eight different receivers catch a pass. Hawaii’s quarterbacks were a combined 20 of 49 for 245 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Neither Ikaika Woolsey or Max Wittek were very effective.

UH running back Paul Harris gained 126 yards on 26 carries and one touchdown. Camanse-Stevens caught six passes for 63 yards. Marcus Kemp pulled down five for 105. The killer were the number of penalties called on Hawaii. The Warriors had 11 for 132 yards.

After building a 21-point lead at the half, Fresno State came out and went three-and-out on its first series. No matter, Max Wittek came in to start the second half at quarterback for UH and promptly threw an interception on his first pass.

It was returned 51 yards by Ejiro Ederaine to the Hawaii 14. Five plays later, Greenlee threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Marteze Waller. Kody Kroening added the PAT to extend Fresno State’s advantage to 35-7 with 11:11 left in the third quarter.

Hawaii managed to get its first touchdown of the second half on a 1-yard run by Melvin Davis as the Warriors went 67 yards on seven plays to cut Fresno State’s margin to 35-14 with 51 seconds left in the third quarter. The game was three hours old as the third quarter came to an end.

Fresno State wasted little time getting that score back on a 64-yard touchdown pass from Greenlee to Jamire Jordan as Kroening hit the PAT to make it 42-14 Fresno State with 14:49 left in the fourth quarter. It was the last score of the second half.

Both teams had opportunities to put points on the board early in the first half, but the defenses turned them away. Hawaii stopped a fourth-down run at its own 12 that was set up on an interception by starting Warriors quarterback Ikaika Woolsey. Fresno State held Hawaii on the ensuing offensive series, forcing a 52-yard field-goal attempt by Rigo Sanchez that went wide right.

Fresno State drove into Hawaii territory later in the first quarter, but was stopped again on a fourth-down play at the UH 35.

After forcing another quick three-and-out, Fresno State went back on the offensive and quickly moved into Hawaii territory, thanks to a trio of roughing-the-passer penalties by the UH defense. The first resulted in the ejection of cornerback Nick Nelson.

The Bulldogs capitalized on the defensive mistakes to score on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Greenlee to receiver Josiah Blandin. Kroening added the PAT. The drive was eight plays for 91 yards as the Bulldogs led 7-0 with 25 seconds left in the first quarter.

Hawaii came back to tie it up on a long scoring drive of its own, going 75 yards on seven plays. The last one was a 14-yard scoring strike from Woolsey to wideout Makoa Camanse-Stevens as Sanchez added the PAT to even the score at 7-7 with 14:03 left in the second quarter.

Fresno State came back to retake the lead, once again aided by stupid penalties by the UH defense. The mistakes led to a 22-yard touchdown pass from Greenlee to Chad Olsen as the PAT was good to make it 14-7 with 11:35 left in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs scored again later in the second quarter on another touchdown pass by Greenlee. This time it was a 28-yard strike to Damari Scott that gave the Bulldogs a 21-7 advantage with 5:44 left in the half. The scoring drive was 11 plays and 85 yards as once again the UH defense is on the field too much.

That showed up again right before the half as Fresno State scored again, this time on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Greenlee to Scott, who was wide open on the play. That touchdown made it 28-7 with 58 seconds left in the half.
