LAHAINA >> Chaminade had UNLV on upset alert for a while, but the Division II Silverswords were unable to keep it going for the full 40 minutes in a 93-73 loss to the Runnin’ Rebels in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational consolation semifinals today.

After losing to No. 5 Kansas by a tournament-record 51 points on Monday, the hosts from Honolulu had eyes for making UNLV their eighth Division I victim in the 32 years of the event. They built an eight-point lead in the first half and led 37-33 at the break.

Guard Rohndell Goodwin scored in transition to open the second half, upping the lead to six.

But UNLV (4-1) gradually took control from there with its length and athleticism and exploded for a 60-point second half. The Rebels forced 22 turnovers, won the rebounding battle by 10 and got a combined 51 points from Derrick Jones Jr. and Patrick McCaw.

Goodwin led the Silverswords with 18 points, 16 of which came in the first half.

Chaminade (0-4) meets St. John’s (3-2) in the Maui seventh place game on Wednesday. 

In the first consolation semifinal today, No. 13 Indiana defeated St. John’s 83-73. No. 19 Vanderbilt routed Wake Forest in today’s first semifinal, 86-64.
