Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell has hired KITV reporter Andrew Pereira for his communications team.

Pereira, who has worked in TV news since joining KHNL-TV as an intern in 1995, will begin his new job as information officer tomorrow according to a statement from the mayor’s office.

Pereira joined KHON-TV as a reporter in 2004, working there there until 2012, after which he was hired at KITV.

“In my opinion, Andrew has always been one of the top investigative journalists in Honolulu, and I’ve admired his writing, his drive to get a good story, and his dedication to accuracy and fairness,” Caldwell said, in a statement. “I look forward to working with him as part of the administration.”

Pereira has won journalism awards, as well as accolades for his reporting from business organizations.

Wonder what ever happened to Justin Fujioka.? He joined Abercrombie’s team and gone now ?

Good guy, but a big step down. A 12 month position with a one-term Mayor

One term? I’m not the biggest fan of Kirk, but I don’t see anyone who can beat him forming an exploratory committee. Bottom line is, t.v. news is one of the least secure jobs around. So 12 months with the mayor? Not much different then a one-year contract at a news station. Just ask Bill Brennan — the guy Pereira is replacing. He’s bounced from t.v. news to the mayor’s office to HART.

The more I think about it, it seems like a buyout. “KITV” Andrew did a lot of investigative/embarrassing stories about the Mayor,City, HART, etc. Now he is on their team making $100,000+ a year. Maybe a good move for both sides.

Good for you, Andrew! Make us proud.

  4. atilter says:

all well and good….for now. the mayor now has a “crack” team” to do PR work to fix image damage done by his inability to manage correctly and efficiently. it’s all after the fact!!!

  5. mikethenovice says:

Caldwell and Andrew. Two good looking men. Right, allie?

  6. mikethenovice says:

Kirk should hired two, just in case one goes on vacation.

  7. Octave says:

Andrew did a good job covering the failings of the rail project. In his new job, will he now be feeding us pro-rail propaganda?
