Big Isle police search for thieves chased off by man at UH-Hilo

Hawaii island police are asking for the public’s help in identifying two suspects who allegedly attempted to steal a student’s computer and backpack at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

At approximately 4:40 a.m. Wednesday, , police said a 21-year-old man was on his computer when he was approached by two suspects.

Campus security said the suspects grabbed the victim’s computer and backpack and ran. There was a brief struggle between the victim and the suspects before the suspects fled with the items.

The 21-year-old man chased the suspects. who then dropped the backpack and laptop and left the campus.

Police described the suspects to be in their late teens to early 20s.

The first suspect was wearing a blue tank top, black shorts, light-colored shoes and a dark-colored baseball cap at the time of the theft. The second suspect wore a dark-colored bandana that covered his nose and mouth. He also wore a gray-hooded sweatshirt, cargo shorts and dark-colored footwear.
