ASSOCIATED PRESS President Barack Obama rides in a motorcade to a morning workout at Marine Corps Base Hawaii on Thursday.

President Barack Obama celebrated on Christmas Eve by taking his family and friends out for dinner at MW Restaurant in the Keeaumoku area.

On the way there, the president’s motorcade passed by Honolulu’s City Hall known as Honolulu Hale and took in its festive Christmas display called “Honolulu City Lights.”

Earlier in the day, first lady Michelle Obama continued her Christmas eve tradition of helping the North American Aerospace Defense Command pinpoint Santa’s location for curious youngsters, as the president and their daughters hiked and spent some time at the beach.

The first lady took 16 calls Thursday from kids all over the world. And during the nearly 40 minutes that she was on the line, she tracked Santa Claus and his reindeer speeding through 10 countries in North Africa and Europe, including Libya, Malta, Italy, Croatia, Albania, Bosnia, Serbia, Germany, Poland and Sweden.

He had already delivered 3 billion gifts by the time Mrs. Obama answered her first call.

The disclosure prompted a caller the White House identified as 8-year-old Kaly to say, “I don’t know how his sleigh can hold that many.”

Meanwhile, the president and daughters took a family hike in Nuuanu on the Judd Memorial Trail and spent the afternoon at the beach at Bellows Air Force Station.

The president’s motorcade stopped on Nuuanu Pali Drive and the president, daughters Sasha and Malia and family friends began the hike at a little after 11 a.m.

The hike goes through a tropical forest and leads to the Jackass Ginger pond with a small waterfall.

It rained twice while the presidential hiking party was on the trail.

According to the book Place Names of Hawaii, the pond is named for a donkey that was often tethered by the pool and for the yellow ginger that grew around the area.

The hike ended just after noon and the motorcade continued over the Pali to Waimanalo and arrived at Bellows Air Force Station at about 12:30 p.m.

The beach at Bellows is closed to the general public today.

“We’re proud to be the First Family’s beach of choice,” said Major Dawn Standridge, who’s the commander of Bellows Air Force Station. Despite overcast skies and some showers, the scenic beach is stunning, known for its turquoise water, soft powdery sand and graceful ironwood trees.

“We’re happy when the President and his family come here to visit and relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of Washington,” says Hano Lono, a recreation assistant at Bellows Air Force Station.

The beach outing ended a little after 3 p.m. and the president and his family returned to their rented Kailua vacation home.

Earlier in the day, Obama started Christmas Eve by working out at the gym at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe.

Just before he left the Kailua rental home where he’s been staying with his family over the holidays, a rainbow appeared over the neighborhood.

As Obama’s motorcade left the Marine base, it passed by a large Christmas tree that’s decorated each year to celebrate the holiday season. The sun was shining over Windward Oahu, where temperatures are in the 70s.

Obama returned to his vacation home after the workout.

Lots go mosquitoes there… hope that had bug spray. OMG, imagine the health department help we would get if the Obamas caught Dingue Fever in Hawaii?

    • mikethenovice says:

yeah. I just read my FlipBoard..comm about how Brazil has kids born with brain damage from the mosquito bite. Even more of a reason to abolish the HI5 container fee, so that we will not have an incentive to save these rain water filled containers only to provide a perfect breeding ground for the mosquitos.

      • MillionMonkeys says:

You are completely WRONG, mikethenovice. HI-5 does not cause an increase in cans lying around; it does the exact opposite. And for every few ounces of water collecting in a few loose cans, there is a thousand times more water collecting in buckets, old tires, ditches, natural ponds, etc. Please take a deep breath, reread your above post, take the appropriate action.

    DEET spray to the rescue.

  3. mikethenovice says:

Just be glad the Obama didn’t name the White House, the jack arse. after have Republican Bush was tethered there for eight years.

  4. mikethenovice says:

Enjoy the view from high on top of O’ahu’s mountain. There is also a cemetery, grave yard, with a nice view of the Windward side of O’ahu that fitches a cool million and a half dollars.

  5. calentura says:

Nice touch about the rainbow. Forget to mention all the unicorns and angels that follow the motorcade.

  6. cojef says:

Am glad the family decided to get out and do some hiking. Being cooped up even in a high-priced rental is for the piths.

  7. kekelaward says:

Couldn’t ask him to say something nice about the American troops killed in Afghanistan? Or how about the taxes he wasted making a 500 pound gingerbread house while black unemployment rates are staggeringly high?

  8. mikethenovice says:

So glad that Obama can finally see our uncut grass along side of O’ahu’s roadways. He can explain to his family what the grass looks like at its natural height of growth.

  9. Jiujitsu_Fighter says:

He needs to get back to Washington and teach Hillary debating skills.

They are always eating fancy dinners. These people spend money like crazy.

I always enjoy reading stories about how Obama and his family are living high off the hog, while many of the rest of us are being forced into bankruptcy or even homelessness.
