High surf advisory in effect for some islands
A large northwest swell is expected to bring surf up to 20 feet along the north shores of the smaller Hawaiian islands for the New Year.
A high surf advisory is in effect for the north and west shores of Oahu, Kauai County, Molokai and the north shore of Maui through 6 p.m. Friday.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service say surf up to 15 to 20 feet may roll into affected north-facing shores, with surf up to 8 to 12 feet expected along west-facing shores in the advisory.
Beachgoers are asked to heed all advice given by lifeguards.
