NOAA / NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE

A cold front is expected to move over the islands from the northwest, changing the winds and bringing an increased chance of showers starting Sunday night.

Kona winds are expected to bring a return of vog and increased humidity as early as tonight as surf rises to dangerous heights Sunday.

The National Weather Service is calling for hazy conditions and light winds Sunday as an approaching cold front cuts off the tradewinds and brings an increased chance of showers starting Sunday night.

A high surf warning is in effect for north- and west-facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai and the north-facing shores of Maui. The warning is in effect from noon Sunday to 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Waves along the north- and west-facing shores of Kauai and Niihau, and the north-facing shores of Maui, Oahu and Molokai are expected to reach heights of 18 to 25 feet Sunday afternoon, then building 30 to 40 feet Sunday evening through Monday. West-facing shores of Oahu and Molokai are expected to reach heights of 14 to 20 feet Sunday afternoon, then building 20 to 25 feet Sunday evening through Monday

Today’s light tradewinds will shift to southeasterly winds this afternoon, bringing volcanic haze back over Oahu.

Forecasters expect sunny weather with partly cloudy conditions through Sunday. Skies will become cloudy with an increased chance of showers Sunday night as the cold front moves over Kauai and Oahu, before dissipating over Maui Monday.

Northerly winds behind the front will push the vog south and east of Oahu on Monday into Tuesday, but light winds should return Tuesday, bringing a return of hazy conditions Tuesday night, continuing for much of next week.

Another northwest swell will also bring a return of warning-level surf around Wednesday.

Any type of weather in Hawaii is fine with me, except that muggy weather in August.
