Medical examiner IDs skateboarder who died after hit by Jeep in Kalihi

The Medical Examiner’s office has identified the 23-year-old skateboarder who died Thursday from injuries he received when he was struck by a car in a busy Kalihi intersection as Kealii Peters-Pasigan.

The 23-year-old driver of a 2015 Jeep Wrangler was traveling south on Liliha Street and had the green light when Peters-Pasigan crossed in front of him Tuesday afternoon. The skateboarder, who was heading east, was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition. He died at the hospital on Thursday.

Police said the accident at North King and Liliha streets occurred at 5:32 p.m.

An autopsy was held to determine cause and manner of death.

Always dismount from skateboards, bicycles and scooters prior to entering a crosswalk. As a driver, I always encounter these people darting in the crosswalk with a lot of close calls. RIP

Hey haven’t you seen the separate green lanes taking up lanes on our road. These apparently mean bicyclist have the right of way to go as fast as they can through the intersection. Good thing, there aren’t very many! Now, they want two bike lanes on each street going in opposite directions. Car drivers may as well give up!

Sad to see someone die so young. As a pedestrian I’m often dodging skateboarders, bikers, Segways, and even the occasional moped on sidewalks. I’ve seen kids doing crazy things in intersections – but they never seem to learn.

Absolutely no surprise a skateboarder hit a car and died. Many skateboarders on Oahu have been recklessly riding night or day on streets and roads, blasting through intersections red or green light, with walk or no walk signs. The reason they are reckless is they want to maintain their board speed on the road for maximum ‘fun’. They cannot do that if they use the sidewalk and abide by the walk signals. Nothing more to say other than Darwinian forces at work here.

I’ve seen skateboarders riding with headphones in their ears, probably blasting music, all the while oblivious to any cars or trucks on the road, riding down the middle of busy streets and intersections–they can’t even hear when someone honks their horns at them to get out of the road.

A senseless tragedy that probably left the driver traumatized and a family mourning for the loss of a member of their Ohana! Sad!

Skateboarders go down Roundtop and Tantalus roads daily. Police need to site and give names to media so no further deaths and accidents can be prevented.
