A county worker cleans the area after up to 1,000 gallons of sewage spilled from a manhole above Kuhio Highway in Kapaia today.

Kauai County crews cleaned up a sewage spill of up to 1,000 gallons that overflowed from a manhole in Kapaia above Kuhio Highway this morning.

The spill is blamed on roots clogging a sewer main. Wastewater officials said it was contained to the immediate area and did not enter Hanamaulu Stream.

The only access to the area was through Kuhio Highway and police diverted traffic around cleanup crews and equipment on the southbound shoulder of the highway.

Crews disinfected affected areas with granulated chlorine. The highway reopened after the clean-up was completed by 2 p.m., according to a news release by the Department of Public Works.
