A ruptured water main forced the closure of a residential street and cut water service to a shopping center in McCully this morning.

Police closed Pumehana Street between Lime Street and Kapiolani Blvd. around 5 a.m. after the broken main was reported just after 4:30 a.m.

Board of Water Supply crews are working to repair a broken 8-inch water main break on Pumehana Street, according to a press release from the utility.

Crews restored water service to McCully Shopping Center just before 11 a.m. today, the Board of Water Supply said.

Nine customers in the area are without water service. A water wagon has been deployed to the area to provide affected customers with water.

Repairs to the water main and roadway are expected to take most of today. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Honolulu’s old and fragile underground water and sewer lines. And they want the fixed rail system going to UH? What if a water line ruptured under the rail system’s cement columns?

Who needs updated INFRASTRUCTURE? WE HAVE “THE RAIL”!

Well an interesting point to be brought up here. The sidewalk directly across from McCully Shopping Center was just completely redone the previous day. The vibrations from that work probably caused the very old, very fragile pipes to go. Just imagine what happens if the rail ever made it through the Kapiolani corridor! Ala Moana Center already has the ever present smell of raw sewage.
