A city worker told a homeless man that the area next to him was about to be power washed and pointed to an area he might want to move to, Friday, in San Francisco. A homeless sweep began early this morning when nearly 50 city workers kicked out campers, cleaned up garbage and cleared the sidewalks under the city’s Central Freeway.

SAN FRANCISCO » Crews in San Francisco have begun sweeping out a homeless camp under the city’s Central Freeway that was declared a health hazard and for months has been a source of irritation for neighbors and nearby businesses.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports the sweep began early this morning when nearly 50 city workers kicked out campers, cleaned up garbage and cleared the sidewalks.

Mayor Ed Lee’s office issued the order and gave the camp’s residents three days to pack up one week ago.

That deadline came and went and the camp dwindled in size as homeless outreach workers helped the few dozen people who were left.

Public works spokeswoman Rachel Gordon says the department wanted to give people ample opportunity to move to other locations.

Are government officials sending homeless people back to where they came from? There are cheaper means of transportation to send these people to the cities they came from?
