COURTESY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY

John Luna

A 36-year-old Oahu Community Correctional Center inmate, who was missing for more than a month, is back in custody, but facing an attempted first-degree murder charge after he tried to run down two arresting officers on Wednesday.

John Luna , who was eligible for parole and was waiting for the parole board to set a release date, was recognized by police officers at Keeaumoku Street and Kapiolani Boulevard as being a wanted escapee.

Police said Luna — who is serving time for burglary, robbery, unauthorized possession of confidential personal information, and drug offenses — tried to elude officers by hitting them with his car.

Th suspect hit a fixed object and was apprehended.

During the investigation, Luna was found to be carrying illegal drugs.

Besides escape, Luna faces charges of first-degree attempted murder and third-degree possession of dangerous drugs.

Luna failed to check in to Module 20 at Oahu Community Correctional Center on Jan. 27, prison officials said. Luna was in the extended furlough program and allowed to live outside the facility, but required to check in at various times throughout the month.

A habitual career drug addict who cannot disassociate himself from it. His only solace is being in prison where he does not have to work for a living. More commonly known as a leech!

cholo thinks they need to better screen the inmates who are candidates for the work furlough program.

Since lawmakers are considering releasing those convicted of a misdemeanor early in order to free up jail space, the furlough program makes sense. Hawaii should go one step further though, and propose suspending all laws such as theft, robbery, rape, and perhaps even murder at least one day out of every calendar month. By legalizing certain crimes on a temporary basis, it will free even more prison space because those crimes (if committed during the amnesty period each month) will not technically be considered a crime. We would be the model for all other states in the nation to follow. Winning the Nobel Peace Prize will surely follow.

It only makes sense to suspend the laws in Hawaii. It’ll be easier than the “early release” program being proposed by lawmakers. In fact, I say if my plan is a success….then it should be expanded to include the temporary suspension of all traffic laws. Each day of the month, citizens should be allowed to speed, disobey pedestrian traffic laws, run red lights, etc. This will free up the court system that is currently overloaded with a backlog of traffic court cases. The same could apply for drunk drivers. Let them drive drunk one day a month without fear of being arrested. It will make our state the modelfor how a sensible and smart government operates.

Too bad the cops didn’t parole him from being alive with their guns……

I see another big lawsuit. But who cares? It’s only taxpayer money. They should have some sort of directional device secured to them.

Build another jail. Always customers available. If not enough customers, then pass a law that says that extreme homelessness is a vagrancy, a misdemeanor with varying sentences depending on the number of times one gets caught being a vagrant. The Three Stooges were experts at being vagrants, by the way.
