Yuki Kato and Kanako Kobayashi experienced some strong winds at the Nuuanu Pali lookout on Feb. 17. A wind advisory, in effect until 6 p.m. today, continues for sections of Hawaii island, Lanai and Kahoolawe, where winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts to 55 mph continue.

Breezy and cool tradewind weather is likely to continue through the weekend.

The National Weather Service narrowed a wind advisory, which had covered most of the state on Thursday. The advisory, in effect until 6 p.m. today, continues for sections of Hawaii island, Lanai and Kahoolawe, where winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts to 55 mph continue.

The windiest conditions are expected on the Big Island in the Kohala district and near Volcanoes National Park.

“Motorists, especially those in high-profile vehicles, are urged to drive with extreme caution,” the weather service said.

The winds also generated choppy surf on east shores of most islands, where a high surf advisory is in effect through 6 a.m. Saturday. Forecasters expect surf of 5 to 8 feet on all islands except Lanai.

The strong northeast winds could blow some showers over windward and mauka areas, which may occassionally spread to leeward areas.

Winds will die down and become variable on Monday as another cold front approaches. The light winds could also bring a return of vog to Oahu.

But winds will change again on Tuesday and there could also be brief heavy showers when the front passes.

Behind the cold front, forecasters expect more windy and cool conditions through the end of next week.

The forecast for Honolulu and south shores of Oahu calls for windy weather today with east winds blowing 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Highs will only be between 77 and 82 degrees with lows dipping into the 60s at night.

Skies will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of showers through Sunday.
