Rainbow Wahine rally past North Dakota State
Hawaii sophomore Rachael Turner drilled a single up the middle with the bases loaded to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Rainbow Wahine softball team rallied past North Dakota State 7-6 to close the Outrigger Spring Fling Tournament today.
After losing to No. 21 Baylor 3-0 in the first game of a doubleheader at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, UH (13-14) trailed NDSU 5-0 going into the fifth inning of the tournament finale. The Wahine scratched out three runs in the fifth, added another run in the sixth and tied the game in the seventh on shortstop Breanna Ojala’s two-out RBI double.
After both teams came up empty in the eighth inning, NDSU regained the lead in the top of the ninth when Logan Moreland’s sharp grounder got through Ojala, allowing Bre Beatty to score the go-ahead run.
UH caught the Bison again when Ulu Matagiese looped a single to shallow center to score Sarah Muzik from third. A Keiki Carlos double and an intentional walk to Ojala loaded the bases for Turner with two out. After swinging at the first pitch, her grounder up the middle got through the infield and Matagiese scored the winning run to snap UH’s five-game losing streak.
Kanani Aina Cabrales earned the win with six innings of relief. She held NDSU (14-11) to three hits, struck out two and walked one. Jacquelyn Sertic, who earned a complete-game win against UH on Friday, gave up four runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings of relief and took the loss.
UH opened the doubleheader with its second loss to Baylor in the tournament. Baylor ace Heather Stearns held the Wahine to one hit and struck out six in the win.
