Strong winds leave landmark Moiliili sign at loss for words
Its messages are often humorous, witty and sometimes philosophical. But for now the sign above the Hawaiian Rent-All store in Moiliili has nothing to say.
On Friday, the face of the sign that has been a fixture at the corner of of McCully and South Beretania streets for nearly 50 years, was violently ripped away.
Was it something the sign said? Did it cause offense?
No, it was just high winds.
The company plans to replace the lost message board with a new one, though how long that will take hasn’t been determined. So for awhile, the old-fashioned marquee with its removable letters will remain blank.

Always enjoyed it. Waiting for a quick return.
The last one was a winnah. “To be honest, our vacuums really suck”.
“My boss told me to change the sign. So I did”
Need “Flashing-Neon”…
This happens when “you let all of the hot air” out from the balloon!
One of the dumbest moves ever made by a driver was caught at that intersection as a white van stopped on McCully Street, making a left turn signal to turn into Beretania Street, which is one way Ewa bound. Turns out the driver was turning into the Shell Service Station on the Makai/Diamond Head corner of Beretania and McCully.
Drivers have to obey signs in order not to get into unnecessary accidents. Just because u can, don’t make illegal turns or lane changes, because sooner or later u will get into a horrendous accident that will cause the life of a keiki to cease, and I’m sure u don’t want that !!! Please see the You Tube video http://youtu.be/2iJAjeLkUxA for this humorous event.
A favorite oldie.
“Why rant and rave when you can rent and save.”
u know I think someone has taken pictures of a lot of those and has them in their album. Well anyway 50 years is a long time. Time for the modern version: all the bells and whistles like they have in Times Square in New York City. Zippy’s has done it, as they have switched to modern displays showing their specials and such. Zippy’s keeps on increasing their prices for their Zip Pacs though. Just five years ago or so, the Zip Pac was about $7.25 each. Now they are over $9.00. OMG Neil what have u done with regard to the minimum wage?
Wow, your post morphed into something else from beginning to end…. 🙂
BTW, good luck with the Times Square type sign. The Outdoor Circle will be all over that. Zippy’s? Those can’t be seen from outside.
“Don’t worry HPD, you can still rent our hoes” after the HDP was banned from hiring prostitutes. Probably a bad idea, but still hilarious.
the repercussions are worth that sign!
I wondered about that this morning when I passed by…thx for the update so we know its only temporary…some of us look forward to seeing what’s up there! 🙂
Always put up great messages, with great wit, in a few words. Hope they bring it back soon and keep it old school style!
I once saw a good one on a similar sign board at a travel agency that said “Please go away”.

“A Waist is a Terrible Thing to Mind” Classic!
The last one before the winds blew them down was “Come see us. Your job will be done before the roads are.” I so wanted to have a picture of that!
That one is a classic. BTW, see photo 2/2 between headline and article.
Oh man, glad I wasn’t riding bike along there when it came flying loose! Been riding past there every day for decades.
One of the best things about Hawaii…..
