Hawaii to face Maryland after Terrapins win 79-74
SPOKANE, Wash. >> Maryland needed a turnover in the closing seconds to ensure it would avoid a place with all the other top seeds that lost in the first round of this topsy-turvy NCAA Tournament, holding off South Dakota State 79-74 today behind a career-high 27 points from Jake Layman.
Deondre Parks fumbled a pass from Keaton Moffitt for the 12th-seeded Jackrabbits (26-8) and Rasheed Sulaimon picked up the ball and stuffed it for the final score. South Dakota State was seeking its first victory in the NCAA Tournament, but was undone by cold shooting in the first half.
Melo Trimble added 19 points and Jared Nickens 14 for fifth-seeded Maryland (26-8), which made 51 percent of its shots, including nine 3-pointers.
Maryland plays 13th-seeded Hawaii, a 77-66 winner Friday over California, in Sunday’s second round.
Parks scorted 22 points for the Jackrabbits.

Hawaii has a chance if they can play smart and avoid turnovers and too many fouls.
any team has a chance if they do those 3 things
UH won’t be playing against the second stringers. No injuries to starters reported.
HOPE WE HAVE THE SAME AWESOME CHEERING U.H. CROWD.
They will be there. Most people likely bought ticket packages for all three games.
This is the “Cinderellas Have Teeth” Tournament! Quite amazing & unanticipated. Hawaii has a good chance to get into the Sweet 16, but will have to be that much finer to take the Terrapins. Defense seems to be the watchword in these upsets. The Bows need to guard the paint, and avoid unnecessary fouls. Janks cannot sit for 13 minutes against Maryland. The three Bows have to go off, for them to win is a given. Get Good Chance – Go Bows!

Sorry – internet weirdness again.
Before I press “Post Comment”, I also make a copy of my post. When something goes awry, I can resubmit. Much better than before though, when the dreaded “Comment Has Been Sent For Approval” message showed up at least 20% of the time. I have never used a swear word, however some combination of words that imply a PG-14 or worse tone were flagged and sent to the upper reaches of the HSA IT department, only to be surprisingly approved hours later. One thing HSA does not want though is a free commercial. So don’t mention stuff like Cha*nel.
From ESPN Insider:
No. 13 Hawaii Rainbow Warriors vs. No. 5 Maryland Terrapins (-7)
Current total: 144
PickCenter consensus pick: 55 percent pick Hawaii to cover
BPI: Maryland has a 80 percent chance of winning.
Lange: California’s Jabari Bird and Tyrone Wallace were unable to play in Hawaii’s 77-66 upset win on Friday. Trying to win in the postseason with recent injuries to two key upperclassmen — one the starting point guard and the other a 40-percent 3-point shooter — is a tough task. But let’s not take away from the fact that Hawaii played extremely well, including a 51.9 percent effort from the floor. This squad has power conference talent, as Roderick Bobbitt and Stefan Jankovic would start for most Pac-12 schools.
Maryland had to sweat in its 79-74 win over South Dakota State. The Terps remind me a lot of Purdue and Vanderbilt — teams that have a difficult time playing up to their potential. And we know how it ended for the Commodores and Boilermakers. On the season, the Terps are only 7-12 ATS when favored by seven or more.
I’m a little surprised Maryland has taken the early money (-6 to -6.5/-7). Hawaii showed that it has talent while Maryland allowed 52 points to SDSU in the second half and barely hung on for the win. I agree that Cal’s injuries had a hand in Hawaii’s win, but I still came away impressed with what I saw out of the Rainbow Warriors. Dangerous matchup and price range for the favorite.
Lean: Hawaii +7
