Man, 54, critically injured in Waimanalo moped crash

A 54-year-old man was critically injured this morning when he lost control of a moped in Waimanalo, police said.

The man was headed eastbound on Kumuhau Street, lost control of the moped and fell on the pavement near Humuniki Street about 6:40 a.m., police said.

He was taken in critical condition with head and internal injuries to the Queen’s Medical Center.

      Mopeds may not always go as fast as cars, but they go fast enough to seriously hurt you if you collide with something or lose control and fall off. It’s a choice you consciously make when you opt for a moped instead of a cheap used car. With the former you get lower ownership and operating costs and less aggravation locating parking spaces. With the latter you get better all-weather convenience plus more passenger and hauling capacity, and of course a crushable metal shell to help you survive a crash. You “takes your money and you makes your choice.”
