18 birds from rare species released on Kauai
Conservationists have released 18 birds to close out a captive breeding program for a rare Kauai species.
KITV reported the puaiohi were raised in captivity and joined a population in the island’s forests last week.
The Hawaiian bird’s Kauai population has increased from 300 to about 500 in the wild today.
Ongoing species recovery efforts will focus threats like introduced predators and the loss of habitat.
A wildlife biologist involved in the collaborative effort says the puaiohi captive breeding model will be used for two other critically endangered Kauai species.

Would have been nice if a picture of what the bird looks like for readers.
Agree, I looked on google and it’s a non descript thrush gray body darker on top–probably never notice it in a crowd.
it would also have nice if the two other critically endangered kauai species were identified…….seems like a half s report
I think the problem is that the SA used the AP feed to cover what is really a local story. TV news the other night did a very good job with this story.
