Hormel to tweak ingredients of some Spam and chili products
NEW YORK » Hormel plans to tweak the ingredients in some of its canned meat products, including two varieties of Spam.
The company said today the changes will be made to Spam Lite and Spam Less Sodium by the end of the year. Tweaks will also be made to its Hormel chili products and Dinty Moore beef stew.
Hormel did not say which ingredients it planned to eliminate. It wants to use “simple, familiar ingredients that consumers know,” Hormel spokesman Rick Williamson said.
The classic variety of Spam won’t be changed, Williamson said. Spam Classic has six ingredients, while Spam Lite and Spam Less Sodium have a few more, including potassium chloride and sodium ascorbate.
Food makers have been tweaking ingredients in recent years to try and appeal to consumers who prefer more natural foods.
Hormel Foods Corp., based in Austin, Minnesota, said it has already removed some ingredients from its Valley Fresh canned chicken, Hormel Compleats microwavable meals and Hormel Always Tender pork loins and roasts.

canned chicken is so passé.
Anybody looking for more natural foods is unlikely to be considering Spam, so this is probably not the reason they are tweaking the ingredients! That said, I love Spam and hope the changes don’t affect the taste.
I want my spam to have an adobo flavor with low salt.
As long as they don’t mess with the original SPAM.
Noooooo! Don’t touch the original SPAM recipe!
Ohoooooooo Don’t Mess wid MY SPAM, NNNooooooo
They can tweak it all they want but it will never be very good for you to eat on a regular basis.
Research seems to show that eating processed meats, yes, Spam is a processed meat, is linked to cancer and other diseases.
Eating Spam on occasion may be okay but people here eat it way too often. Is it any wonder, the cancer rates, heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure are affecting more and
more people here, leading to a great deal of suffering which then leads to premature death.
agree..it is just too horrible to imagine
What foods today aren’t processed in some fashion? Unless you grow, catch, or shoot your own food, one is almost always eating or drinking something that’s been exposed to ingredients supposedly harmful.
I only eat Spam during hurricanes, and other natural disasters.
Nooooo, not less chemicals and preservatives! I’ve been a loyal customer for you all these years. :*(
Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam
