New boat runs aground at Maui’s Big Beach
State boating officials are working with the owner of a 19-foot motor boat that ran aground at Makena State Park, also known as Big Beach, Sunday night.
Maui firefighters were called at 6:04 p.m. to a report of a boat washed up on the rocky point between Big Beach and Little Beach.
The boat’s operator, who had purchased the vessel a few days ago, had apparently anchored the boat offshore of Little Beach and swam ashore to meet with friends, Maui fire official said.
At some point, the boat drifted toward the rocks and ran aground on the south side of Little Beach.
There was a large hole in the vessel’s hull. However, state Department of Land and Natural Resource said there was no evidence of fuel leaking from the motor boat. The DLNR will be communicating with the owner regarding the removal of the boat from the beach.
