A 27-year-old probationer was indicted by an Oahu Grand Jury Tuesday for stabbing to death a 16-year-old Farrington High School football player and also stabbing the teen’s older brother during a dispute over a drug deal.

Adrian J. Bringas, 27, is being held at the Oahu Community Correctional Center, unable to post bail of $500,000 after being charged with second-degree murder in the death of Wesley Ulugalu-Sula, 16; and second-degree assault of Ulugalu-Sula’s 18-year-old brother, Chippa.

Wesley Ulugalu-Sula died two days shy of his 17th birthday.

Bringas is expected to be arraigned in Circuit Court next week.

Bringas also was arrested for violating terms of his probation, and while in custody last week, was arrested for violating terms of a protective order.

A judge on March 29 granted Bringas a pass to leave Oahu Community Correctional Center to attend a drug rehabilitation program, but Bringas never returned, authorities said. Bringas was incarcerated because he had failed terms of his probation following a 2009 conviction for robbery.

Bringas has 24 criminal convictions dating back to 2008, including three felonies, according to the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center. The felony convictions were for breaking into a car, abuse and second-degree robbery. He also has been convicted eight times for violating terms of his probation.

According to a police affidavit, Bringas allegedly approached a group of juvenile males on April 12 on Ahonui Street fronting a Kalihi public housing complex, and attempted to sell them illegal drugs.

During an argument with the Ulugalu-Sula brothers, Bringas allegedly pulled an object out of his backpack. He then stabbed Wesley Ulugalu- Sula once in the upper chest and Chippa Ulugalu-Sula in the upper right leg, according to the police statement.

Police said Bringas fled on foot but flagged down a police officer at a gas station on Middle Street and was taken to Queen’s Medical Center for treatment of his wounds.

The brothers also were taken to the Queen’s Medical Center, where Wesley Ulugalu-Sula died at 10:35 p.m. Chippa Ulugalu-Sula, who was transported in serious condition, was treated for a stab wound to his right hip and released.
