Rainbow Wahine errors fuel Cal State Fullerton win

Cal State Fullerton pounced on six Hawaii errors and the Titans remained unbeaten in Big West play with a 7-1 win tonight at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Cal State Fullerton (36-10, 10-0 Big West) put two runners on with two out in the top of the fifth on back-to-back errors at shortstop and Delynn Rippy broke a scoreless tie with her first home run of the season. Missy Taukeiaho gave Cal State Fullerton a 5-0 lead two batters later with her eighth home run and the Titans extended their winning streak to 11 in claiming the opener of a three-game conference series.

The UH infield committed four more errors in the sixth inning to surrender a sixth unearned run. The Titans capped the scoring in the seventh on Courtney Rodriguez’s RBI double.

Cal State Fullerton freshman Sydney Golden gave up six hits over six innings, struck out three and walked none in the win. UH third baseman Nicole Lopez broke up the shutout with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.

UH right-hander Brittany Hitchcock held the Titans to one hit through 4 2/3 innings and had faced just one batter over the minimum before the miscues in the infield extended the inning and Cal State Fullerton strung together four straight hits, including the home runs by Rippy and Taukeiaho.

The series concludes with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Saturday on “Power in Pink” day at RWSS.
