Firefighters battle brush fire at Waialae Nui Ridge
Several Honolulu fire companies along with a helicopter dropping buckets of water were fighting a stubborn brush fire this afternoon in the mauka area of Waialae.
Fire spokesman Capt. David Jenkins said companies arrived at 2:06 p.m., six minutes after receiving the initial call for help at an Alaeloa Street in the Waialae Nui area.
Homeowner Jon Ogata said the fire appeared to have started near a power line and moved to within 50 yards of his house.
“It was a cause for concern,” he said.
“The Fire Department was here right away.”
Ogata said firefighters ran hoses through properties and were able to stop the advance of the fire toward the homes at Alaeloa Street.

He said the brush fire, located on the Ewa side of Alaeloa Street, burned a large area, including undeveloped properties, and had moved to a separate ridge farther Ewa near Kilauea Avenue.
He said the fire was no longer moving mauka and was moving makai down the valley.
