3 children, 1 woman injured in school bus-SUV crash in Kaaawa

A crash between a crowded school bus and an SUV led to four people being taken to the hospital and police closing Kamehameha Highway tonight in Kaaawa.

An Emergency Medical Services report said a 51-year-old woman was taken to the hospital in serious condition and three children were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The crash occurred about 7:05 p.m. near Kualoa Regional Park and about 15 firefighters responded to the incident.

About 30 elementary school students and adult chaperones were on the bus, and three girls, about 10 years old, were treated and taken to the hospital by paramedics, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins.

The driver of the SUV was pinned in her vehicle and had to be extricated by firefighters, he said.

Police reported Kamehameha Highway was closed in both directions from Crouching Lion Inn to the 7-Eleven.
