Driver in fatal Laie crash arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide

A car involved in a fatal single-vehicle accident came to rest in a field in Laie on March 18.
The driver of a car in a suspected drunk driving fatal crash has been arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide, more than a year after the incident in Laie.
Police believe the car was traveling at speeds of more than 100 mph and the 20-year-old Hauula man driving the vehicle was intoxicated when the car crashed through a fence and rolled over several times in a field, killing a 27-year-old Hauula woman.
Officers arrested the suspect Wednesday on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide. He was released Wednesday afternoon pending further investigation.
The medical examiner said the victim, Nakita Bryant, died of blunt force injury to her head.
Police said both occupants of the car had been drinking and were thrown from the car when it crashed at 1:50 a.m. March 18, 2015 on Kamehameha Highway near Gunstock Ranch.
Paramedics took the driver to the hospital in serious condition.

I dont know if the cops were dragging their feet on this one or if it was the prosecutors office but one year is way too long.
I remember the big hole in the fence when I walked by the next day in 2015…….and then the flowers, balloons and tons of beer bottles in tribute to those two as days went by.
On March 18, 2016, there were pink and black balloons on the repaired fence in tribute to Nikita…..sad.

“tons of beer bottles in tribute” – That is what caused the crash. I wouldn’t consider that a tribute.
Note: the accident occurred in Malaekahana, not too far from the Kahuku bridge – only the southern part of Gunstock Ranch is in Laie.
This is typical Hawaii sham justice. In jurisdictions other than Hawaii the arrest most likely would have been made either at the scene or upon release from the hospital. Probable cause is probable cause. Certainly worst case scenario would be waiting the return of BAC on the bloodtest. If that takes a year we re really in trouble. Meanwhile, the survivors of the victim suffer, wondering if justice will ever be done. Just sayin’…

Jfbz, the driver went to the hospital. Maybe he was incapacitated? BAC is drawn at the hospital.
Drinking does not cause a person to drive a hundred miles an hour, it is the person. There are a lot of responsible drinkers.
Lock this perp up once and for all.
Interesting laws we have here. You can be arrested for SUSPICION but immediately released to get drunk again and drive at 100+ mph.
