Suspect no longer being held for Kalihi man’s death
A 19-year-old Waipahu man suspected of murder who tried to jump off the Gulick Avenue bridge onto the H-1 freeway was no longer being held today by police for the Monday incident pending further investigation.
The man, however, remained in custody on a $5,000 warrant in an unrelated auto theft case and was at the Queen’s Medical Center, where he was taken Monday for a mental evaluation.
Witnesses told police they saw the suspect chase 48-year-old Riley Meade, of Kalihi, and assault him just before 5 a.m. Monday. Officers responding to the assault at Aloha Island Mart on North School Street in Kalihi found Meade face down in the parking lot and unresponsive, and officers began CPR. Paramedics treated Meade and took him with head injuries to the Queen’s Medical Center. He died later that morning.
Police got a description of a suspect and chased the man to the Gulick Avenue bridge, where he climbed over the railing. Officers talked with him, then later wrestled him back over the railing and to the ground. Police arrested the man for investigation of second-degree murder.
The freeway’s Ewa-bound lanes were closed for nearly an hour while police talked with the man on the overpass.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office said Meade died of sudden cardiac death, which is the sudden stopping of the heart, and heart disease was another significant factor. The office ruled Meade’s death a homicide.

Headline typo: Kalihi not Kaliki.
What?
released pending investigation?
alllie, please utilize your literary skills and read paragraph two.
He should be “held” pending the investigation of the possible “second-degree murder”. Would HPD have released him if he didn’t have that “warrant in an unrelated auto theft case”?
