Former police officer charged with assault in King Street bar shooting
Retired Honolulu police Sgt. Anson Kimura has been charged with assault in connection with a shooting at a King Street bar that injured a bartender last year.
On Friday, city prosecutors charged Kimura, 57, with second-degree assault, a charge of recklessly causing serious bodily injury to the bartender April 3, 2015. Kimura turned himself in to state sheriff deputies Tuesday and was released after posting $5,000 bail.
He could appear in court for his arraignment as early as next week.
Second-degree assault is a Class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
Police said a 41-year-old female employee of King’s Sports Bar on South King Street was shot in the stomach when a handgun accidentally discharged.
Kimura was off duty at the time of the early morning shooting. He was placed on restricted duty following the shooting and retired in May last year with 25 years of service.
