Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton listened as Sen.Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. spoke during a rally in Portsmouth, N.H., today, where Sanders endorsed Clinton.

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. » Bernie Sanders, whose calls for a political revolution energized millions of voters, bestowed his long-awaited endorsement on Hillary Clinton today, the Democratic former rivals embracing and praising each other before a cheering crowd of thousands.

Just two weeks shy of the Democratic National Convention, Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, congratulated Clinton for winning the nomination and vowed to do everything he could to help her beat presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

“It is no secret that Hillary Clinton and I disagree on a number of issues — that’s what this campaign has been about,” Sanders said.

But he added, “This campaign is not really about Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders, or any other candidate who sought the presidency. This campaign is about the needs of the American people and addressing the very serious crises that we face.”

With a huge smile, Clinton embraced Sanders and they raised their arms in a traditional unity pose.

Clinton told the crowd, which included some Sanders supporters who have been slow to come to Clinton’s side, that she was overjoyed to welcome “friends, old and new.” She echoed her campaign slogan, telling the crowd “we are stronger together.”

With the convention approaching, Sanders said there has been a significant coming together between the two campaigns and we produced, by far, the most progressive platform in the history of the Democratic Party. Our job now is to see that platform implemented by a Democratic Senate, a Democratic House and a Hillary Clinton president – and I am going to do everything I can to make that happen.”

Democrats have coalesced around Clinton’s candidacy since she defeated Sanders in primaries last month in California and five other states, led by endorsements from President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and others.

Sanders has spent the past month seeking to influence the party’s platform for the Philadelphia convention and promote electoral reforms including allowing independents to participate in future primaries. The platform includes many of his proposals, including a $15 an hour minimum wage, tougher restrictions on Wall Street and an end to the death penalty.

The event at a Portsmouth high school sought to project Democratic unity before Republicans formally nominate Trump next week in Cleveland but some Sanders’ supporters in the crowd did not appear to be ready to move on.

Chants of “Bernie” broke out in the gymnasium while opening speakers addressed the crowd, prompting Clinton’s faithful to chant, “Unity.” When Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, a Clinton supporter, told the audience, “We need to elect Hillary,” some Bernie supporters stood and shouted, “No,” which was followed by chants of “Hillary” in the crowd.

“It’s like he’s giving up if he endorses her,” said Steve Rand, a hardware store owner from Plymouth, New Hampshire, before the two candidates took the stage. He added: “She stands for everything that I am against.

The Vermont senator saw his longshot bid for the White House quickly catch fire in 2015 at large-scale rallies where he denounced income inequality, the influence of Wall Street and the role of big money in politics — all part of a system he described as “rigged.”

Sanders was powered by an impressive online fundraising machine that raised more than $200 million and threatened Clinton’s once overwhelming lead in the Democratic primaries with the help of college students, independents and white voters drawn to his anti-establishment message. His endorsement could help bring some of those supporters into the fold for Clinton as she faces Republican Donald Trump.

“In these stressful times for our country, this election must be about bringing our people together, not dividing us up,” Sanders said. “While Donald Trump is busy insulting Mexicans, Muslims, women, African Americans and veterans, Hillary Clinton understands that our diversity is one of our greatest strengths.”

Trump, who previously said Sanders has been “treated terribly by the Democrats” and should have run as an independent, wasted no time going after the Vermont senator.

“Bernie Sanders, who has lost most of his leverage, has totally sold out to Crooked Hillary Clinton,” Trump wrote today as part of a series of Tweets ahead of the Portsmouth event. “Sanders was not true to himself and his supporters.”

NOT ME. I may vote for Jill Stein.

        • hawaiikone says:

aomohoa, Johnson has vastly more experience, and good results. Stein wants to redistribute without any viable ability to finance it. Please, if you’re wise enough to avoid voting for the two buffoons in the headlines, then carefully go over the differences between Johnson’s ticket and Stein’s.

        • HawaiiCheeseBall says:

I agree, but it sure is fun to watch the lunatic fringe call Bernie a traitor. I think Bernie ran a good campaign. He brought up some issues that people care about and not that he will not be the nominee he did the mature thing and endorsed the party nominee.

So you prefer lying Donald, the candidate with the worse record on telling the truth. This really indicates your position on lying. What is the real problem with Hillary? She doesn’t lie enough?

        Q. Why did Bernie endorse Hillary now?
        A. They threatened to completey shut him out of the convention if he didn’t.
        Q. Couldn’t he have said screw them and go and fight at the convention anyway?
        A. No. Hillary has more delegates, Superdelegates, and supporters on the DNC rules committee. They would have voted down every one of our platforms, denied Bernie the opportunity to speak, and basically shut him out of the entire process. All the leverage he has gained up to this point would be gone.
        Q. So wait, Bernie DIDN’T quit today?
        A. No. He had to say she won the primary, he endorses her and will help the party defeat Trump, yadda yadda but he DID NOT concede. There is a very big and important difference. Had he conceded, all of his delegates would go to Hillary and he would no longer be an option for nominee.
        Q. So Bernie can actually still win??
        A. YES. And if he wasn’t still TRYING to win, he would have conceded. The ONLY option he had to get to the convention with his delegates behind him and have a chance to still win was to do what he did today. He is not a traitor. He didn’t sell us out. He did the only possible thing he could have done to keep fighting for the nomination.
        Q. So how can Bernie still win if he’s losing the delegate count and he just said he will help Hillary win the election?
        A. By far the most important thing to the DNC, even more important than making sure Hillary beats Bernie, is making sure the Democratic nominee beats the Republicans in November. They scrutinize every poll, every opinion of the public, every event to judge whether a candidate is strong enough to win in November. There are A LOT of things going on right now that show how weak of a general election candidate Hillary Clinton is:
-66% of the country sees her as untrustworthy
-60% thinks she should have been indicted for the email scandal
-A lot of Bernie supporters won’t vote for her
-Congress has requested the Department of Justice investigate her for lying under oath about the email scandal
-There’s a possibility more emails will be leaked by wikileaks or hackers further proving her guilt
-Many believe the FBI is secretly investigating the Clinton Foundation
-Her “wins” during the primary havr been tainted with accusations of fraud, suppression, lawsuits, and investigations
And then there’s Bernie. An honest candidate people trust and whose approval rating and trustworthy rating crushes Clinton’s. This is the argument Bernie will make at the convention. With all his 1,900 delegates inside arguing this case and 100,000 supporters outside arguing this case, we hope the DNC realizes he’s the only choice. He CAN win the convention, but he has to get there first. That’s why he endorsed her today.
        Q. So it’s still important that all of his delegates go to the convention and we all still March on it like we planned?
        A. It’s more important now than it ever was before.
        Q. What if the DNC still refuses to nominate him at the convention? Can he still run third party now that he endorsed her?
        A. Yes. In fact, running third party has never been an option until AFTER the convention. We need to stick with Bernie and see this through to the convention. He’s led us this far. Do not abandon him now.
        Q. What if he loses at the convention and doesn’t run third party, but instead endorses Hillary 100% and asks us to vote for her?
        A. Then our revolution continues without him and we continue to fight against Hillary Clinton and the DNC all the way up to November and beyond by voting for someone like Jill Stein or writing Bernie in. But the time for that is NOT here yet.

I’ll be holding my nose in the voting booth, but you bet I’ll be voting for Hillary. Drumpf is a poison pill for America. Change needs to come, and it will come despite Hillary’s limitations as a candidate. But I’m going to continue working within the system we’ve got, because Drumpf’s “nuclear option” is just plumb loco.

      • lespark says:

        Blow your nose first.

        • choyd says:

Better than lighting the Constitution on fire like how Trump has wanted to for decades.

Better the crook than the dictator. How you can claim to be a Conservative yet back a decades old Constitution and bill of rights hater is beyond reason.

Or….we could all just vote Gary Johnson, break the two parties and finally be free of the dumpster choices.

        • Ronin006 says:

Choyd, there is no Constitution to be burned. The one we sued to have was shredded by Obama.

        • Keonigohan says:

          Ronin006…you scorched choyd!’

        • choyd says:

          Really, Ronin006?

Tell me, has Obama moved to shut down media sources he doesn’t like as Trump has promised to do against publications like the Washington Post?

Tell me, has Obama moved to use massive eminent domain to take property left and right as Trump has done for decades and promised for his giant wall?

Let’s see if you can do those two before I start listing more. I seriously doubt you will even try.

        • choyd says:

Keonigohan, when Ronin inevitably fails to answer my questions, how about you take a try?

I fully expect Ronin to cowardly run away as he always does. Maybe then you can attempt to succeed where he (as always) fails?

        • choyd says:

Keonigohan, how is excluding a few press corp people (which, FYI Trump has done on a much larger scale banning the Washington Post, Politico, Buzzfeed and others) equate to explicit threats to shutdown and use libel against media sources he dislikes?

          You. Won’t. Answer. That.

          You won’t even try.

        • Keonigohan says:

        • choyd says:

          Are you…just…seriously?

Do you not understanding the notion of curtailing access vs using the Federal Government and courts to stomp on free speech and free press?

Jesus. How do you know get something that simple? Did Obama strip them of their 1st amendment rights?? No. Trump is explicitly promising to end the first amendment for media he does not like.

How do you not get something so mind bogglingly simple?

As for your second question, Hillary was responsible for the global sanctions that brought Iran to heel. The very same sanctions that Republicans during the primary promised more of.

        • Keonigohan says:

choyd….not accepting my answer to your question is your perogative.
Your response to the 2nd question is hiLIARy’s one & only accomplishment….ok.
          (WOW!)

        • Keonigohan says:

People ask me all the time: “what’s next for our revolution?”
Maybe not in those words. But everyone wants to know what our plan is to turn the deeply held values we share into our political reality.

So let’s talk about it – tonight.

Join me tonight at 8pm Eastern / 5 Pacific for a livestreamed conversation and Q&A on my Facebook page about the next steps for our revolution!

There is nothing more inspiring than what we can accomplish together when we break free from the 2-party trap and build a winning movement to put people, planet and peace over profit.

And there is nothing the corporate predators who control both establishment parties fear more than an informed and engaged movement of people like you and me.

So I want to tell you about our plans and answer your questions: How do we get the word out about the campaign? What’s the plan to get on the ballot? What about the debates? How can I help?

Whether you’re ready for action or just want to learn more, please join me tonight on Facebook at 8pm Eastern / 5 Pacific and let’s talk about what’s next for our revolution!

In the meantime, I’d appreciate very much if you spread the word on Facebook

I have no problems with social libertarians.
Financial libertarians are stuck in the 19th. century.
Ayn Rand libertarians are straight-up loons.

So Johnson wants to free the herb. That’s just not enough to garner my vote. Besides, a vote for Johnson just gives Drumpf a leg-up. Naw, I think I’ll pass.

        • Boots says:

HanabataDays, how does voting for Johnson give the Donald a leg up? The libertarian party might clime to 15% of the vote and I am willing to bet that most of these votes will be from republicans who are unhappy with a candidate with zero political experience and has been an embarrassment on multiple occasions.

        • hawaiikone says:

bata, so Hillary lies enough to “garner” it? Best you stick with her, then, as your mindset’s seem compatible..

      • Boots says:

I suspect Hillary will easily win in November and especially in Hawaii so I probably will be voting for either Jill Stein or Gary Johnson. I am leaning towards Johnson as there was an article saying he might be able to crack the 15% threshold which would put the libertarian party into the debates. Of course the two major parties would then push to increase the percentage to 30%

      • lespark says:

Loretta Lynch better get out and start campaigning for Crooked Hiliary like her Job depended on it.

    • lwandcah says:

I have never understood how a candidate can so vehemently chastise there opponent, pointing out every single one of the failures, shortcomings, and faults, and then do a 180 degree shift to all of the sudden support that very person.

      • Boots says:

What is there to understand? This is done all the time. Look at the republican side? Never thought that Christie would end up being such a Donald supporter.

      • HIE says:

Maybe if you were better educated in logic & reason, you’d understand. Bernie, while technically an Independent, caucuses with the Democrats in the Senate. If he wants to be in any position to push his policy ideas as a Senator, he needs a Democratic POTUS, as well as, a Democratic Senate and House. A Trump presidency and GOP Congress basically makes Sanders totally powerless.

    • Boots says:

A poll recently came out showing that more Bernie supporters back sweet Hillary than Hillary supporter backing Obama this time in 2008.

      • choyd says:

Not so much as back Hillary as loathe Trump.

Her Corrupt Highness is a bad choice.

But it’s better than Mr. “Burn The Constitution.”

        • koleanui says:

Stop this ridiculous diatribe about Trump and the C. The most anti-constitutional positions in history continue to be held by Odumbo, Warren and Downhill.
1.The C. says: No imperial president
2.All created equal under the law: apparently not Downhill, Holder, Lynch etc.
3.Power of the purse= U.S. House, NOT the WH
4.Right to bear arms: not just Dem security forces
Do you still claim ignorance and blindness?

        • choyd says:

koleanui, why is it ridiculous? Have you read any of the constitutional articles the National Review has put out showing why Trump is the greatest threat to the Constitution in decades?

          Yes. The NATIONAL REVIEW.

And you seem unaware of what prior presidents have done, such as Lincoln did.

You also don’t seem to remember the Bush’s administration’s PRISM program as well as indefinite detention of terrorists, both US citizens and otherwise. Tell me how that’s constitutional.

Do you still claim ignorance and blindness or will you admit that Trump HATES the Constitution?

        • Boots says:

Choyd, I do not like Hillary because she tends to be a hawk. Calling her corrupt is a bit much though and is generally little more than republican propaganda. Her email has been way overblown and I am disgusted that they still concentrate on this rather than other issues. The Clinton foundation is another overblown fear of republicans but that at least appears to be more relevant.

        • koleanui says:

Dear choyd, no mater how you twist Trumps views, the old Maxim goes “practice makes perfect” as in Odumbo, Downhill, Warren, Holder, etc as far as breaking C. amendments

    • loves to read says:

My heart is broken. I’m not voting for her. Hasn’t anyone read Bernstein’s “Who is Hillary Clinton”? It’s a long read (I saw it on CNN.COM in their politics section) but the meat of it (she’s a liar) is at the very end.
      How could Bernie do this?

      • hawaiikone says:

Since you obviously enjoy reading, peruse the history and political philosophy of Gary Johnson, our next president…

      • Boots says:

lol, so Hillary is a “liar”. What politician hasn’t lied? The Donald the main alternative is the number one liar in this election. Most of Hillary’s “lies” involve her email which I don’t care about.

As for Bernie supporting her, I think it is obvious that they agree on far more things than they disagree on and their disagreements seem to be more on degree rather than substance. What do you Bernie would do? Support the Donald? Bernie has succeeded in pushing the democratic party back left to the center. This is a good thing. Hillary will be a good president just like her husband provided she doesn’t blow up another war in the middle east or Russia.

Didn’t any of the bloggers listen to the Sander’s speech??? He blasted the rich for making millions and Wall Street making billions through loopholes and there was Hillary bobbing her head and laughing. I would too if I make 21 MILLION DOLLARS in two weeks giving speeches to Wall Street financial companies. Talk about a hypocrite!!!!! The lying part everybody acknowledges.

  10. aomohoa says:

He was pressured and she looks exhausted from pressuring him! She would not win without his support. There may still be people who write in his name on the ballot.

    • hawaiikone says:

wili, there’s a time in the life of any electorate when they have to choose between supporting what they want to hear or supporting what they need to hear. This cycle, with such polarized attitudes coupled with such weak candidates, truly offers contemplative voters a real opportunity to break away from continuously decaying mediocrity. Vote Johnson!

  13. Cellodad says:

Now that you children have whined and screamed, the fact remains that a relatively obscure senator has managed to bring his concerns to the national forum. Though I don’t agree with all he says, I am in awe of his political acumen and the way in which he ran a campaign that did exactly what he wanted. That is, to get the majority of the electorate talking about what he thinks is important and to bring his ideas to the Democratic platform in a Presidential election year. Pretty darn smart.

This old man with communist and socialist tendencies would have fit in perfectly in the ’50’s but never liked him or bought into his agenda but the young people are so duped by his soialistic tendencies that they are uneducated and ignorant of what reality is like in the real world….of course, they’re going to support this geriatric old man who wanted free tuition for all college bound students…..how stupid and idealistic is that…..all these liberals, incl. Clinton, will do is drive our economy into a bigger debt than we have now…….I could go on endlessly why I think Sanders is a phony, not to mention Clinton who lacks integrity, character, honesty, and true moral values…she is a “congenital liar” nothing more and nothing less and I could not vote for someone like her to be President of the U.S……very arrogant behind the scenes…..all of the secret service personnel assigned to her just dreads being in her presence because they know her true character…..PERIOD.

To all my crooked supporters, it’s once again time to donate your time and MONEY to my campaign. Wall Street is not returning my calls, I have offered to make speeches at a discount to no avail. Foreign governments that persecute women cannot donate to my campaign. Money laundered to the Foundation is under scrutiny.
We are outspending the Trump campaign 10-1. It’s not enough. We have to flood the airwaves against truth and honesty.
Don’t waste time making comments. Send MONEY.
    Aloha,
    Crooked Hilliary.
