Landslide cuts off Hana Highway for second time in a week

For the second time this week, a landslide closed a portion of Hana Highway on Maui.

The highway, which is the only land access to Hana on the eastern end of Maui, was closed at 6:30 a.m. between mile marker 6 and 7 near Kailua Stream

Work crews have been dispatched to clear the landslide.

This is the second time this week that a portion of Hana Highway has been closed because of landslide.

On Sunday, Hana Highway at mile marker 19, in the area of Waialua, was closed to traffic in both directions due to a landslide. It took road crews all day Sunday to clear the debris. The road was reopened at 8 p.m.

Meanwhile in West Maui, the Department of Health posted a brown water advisory for Honokahua because of heavy rains.

The public is advised to stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, sewer manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals and associated flood debris.

The National Weather Service reports that nearly 2.9 inches fell in West Wailuaiki and Puu Kukui in the leeward/upcountry area in the 24 hour period ending at 11 a.m.
